This was a box Dad made for my Mom to keep her knitting needles and sewing cottons etc. in. It was presented to her a 1st anniversary present. I always remember Dad giving Mom roses on their wedding anniversary and even her the wooden boarder had roses carved into the beading.
After a little sanding I realised that the basis for the original box was an orange box. In 1953, when the sewing box was made, there was still rationing in England and fruit from abroad was still difficult to come by. So, this orange box would have been a rare sight.
The box had been decorated with a floral beading on all four sides and originally on the lid. That lid no longer exists after our pet dog decided to chew it and the lid was replaced with plain wood. I couldn’t find any matching beading either, so chose a single rose to enhance the top of the sewing box.
The box is painted in Dulux Heritage Velvet Matt, Potters Pink and Johnson’s metallic wood paint in silver. Then finished with 2 coats of Frenchic Tuff Coat.
