A friend asked for help finding a TV unit to go with the 2 coffee tables that I have previous upcycled for them. These had been painted in purple and silver.
Firstly we found a pine TV unit on FB Marketplace for free – it had previously been upcycled using a dark grey paint on the carcass and a mahogany stain on the top and drawers. The top was stained with cup markets and there was candle wax too.
Next the preparation – I scrapped off the candle wax and wiped down all over with sugar soap. Once dry I used paint stripper on the top after an hour I scrapped off the 1st layer. Then repeated the process as I was now left with a orange varnish. Once all of the varnish was removed I wiped down again with sugar soap and allowed to dry.
Next was the sanding firstly with the big sander and a 40 grit – this was more to remove the damage to the wood. There were dents and scores all over the wood. Once these were gone then I swapped to a 240 grit to smooth the surface. Finally I cleaned off the dust.
Whilst I was sanding the top I also sanded the sides and front ready for painted.
Painting:
Sides and front were painted with Dulux Heritage in Blueberry. The bottom was painted in Johnson’s Silver. Three coats of each.
Then the top was painted with 3 coats of satin finish clear vanish from Ronseal.
The final touch was new draw knobs with Dragons on (my friend loves fantasy books with dragons.)
