I was given this little unit/table from a neighbour. They were going to take it to the dump as the legs were wobbly and vanish was peeling. There was also water damage to the top where possible a plant or a vase had been.
The first thing that I did was remove the legs and drawer.
A light sand on the drawer and then I painted this with 151 Coatings – Gold metallic Paint. I also painted the nob at the same time.
Next was the sanding of the top – this did not go well, so I decided to use paint and varnish stripper. This removed the thick dark vanish and I was able to sand the remaining marks from the surface. The sides sanded easily, I think at some point the previous owner may have re-varnished the top themselves, which is why I was having such a problem.
Once clean and dry I painted the unit with Frenchic AL Fresco in Dive In – 3 coats and then 2 coats of satinwood clear varnish.
Then the legs I hand sanded and painted with the same Frenchic and allowed to dry for 2 days before adding the Gold metallic paint highlights.
I’m actually pleased with the results – this is first time using the gold like this and I think I have fallen in love.
